Shoe Review: Babolat JET Mach 4
By Jon Levey
The Babolat JET Mach 4 is fast, explosive, and more comfortable than ever. Lightweight and lightning-quick, it combines upgraded cushioning, reinforced stability, and durable materials to keep players moving with confidence across every sprint, cut, and stop. All the speed you expect, with more support that your feet will thank you for.
Incoming vs. Outgoing
Babolat’s JET line has always been about one thing: getting players to the ball faster. The fourth iteration takes that speed further, pairing explosive court response with improved comfort. An updated EVA midsole with Pebax delivers springy energy return, especially under the forefoot, while the new Starting Bloc plate adds structure, stability, and rebound on lateral moves. The reinforced Matryx upper boosts support and durability without weighing the shoe down. Even with the added weight from these upgrades, the JET Mach 4 still lets players launch across the court with ease.
Fit
Over successive generations, the JET Mach line has trended toward a more forgiving fit, and this update is the most accommodating yet. The forefoot feels roomier than the previous model, fitting a broader range of foot shapes. Players with narrower feet may need to cinch the laces more securely and use the optional runner’s knot to minimize heel slippage.
With the more relaxed cut—and possibly the thicker mesh—the upper can billow when fully tightened. While this causes limited snapping or popping, the bubbling may be noticeable during the first few sessions. Beyond that, the shoe feels game-ready out of the box, with minimal break-in required.
Cushioning & Comfort
This is where the JET Mach 4 makes its biggest leap. Cushioning and shock absorption are noticeably improved over previous versions. Earlier models felt firm and sparse—especially under the forefoot—but this update delivers a plusher, more enjoyable ride from heel to toe with better energy return. While less low-to-the-ground than past models, the tradeoff is improved impact protection, reduced fatigue, and happier feet over long matches.
Comfort is enhanced up top, where the thicker mesh upper provides a more substantial, supportive feel. The gusseted tongue is just thick enough to guard against lace pressure while staying centered, and a well-padded collar hugs the ankle and heel, rounding out the shoe’s gentler ride.
Stability & Support
A hallmark of the JET line—and a key reason the shoe stays so lightweight—is the Matryx upper. This woven construction blends low weight with high-strength aramid and polyamide fibers for impressive resiliency without added bulk. The Mach 4 doubles down with a second layer, enhancing support while keeping just enough elasticity for a secure, locked-in feel.
Lateral stability is reinforced by the new Starting Bloc plate in the midsole. In addition to strengthening the sidewalls for confidence during aggressive cuts, it adds propulsion to each step. Along with the updated cushioning, the plate positions the foot in a subtle rocker shape, keeping players on their toes and ready to react. A slightly wider lateral flange also creates a broader, more stable base during quick direction changes.
The Michelin outsole design remains largely unchanged. The tread is more robust on the medial forefoot, with a tighter, lower-profile pattern along the lateral edge and heel. The outsole is split by the midfoot shank, allowing a natural bend and controlled flexibility. Grip is aggressive out of the box—producing plenty of squeak—so players who slide may need a short break-in before achieving a smoother glide.
Durability
Durability is another area where the JET Mach line continues to rise. Earlier versions leaned heavily into a minimalist vibe; while that design kept the shoe extremely light and agile, it wasn’t built to withstand sustained abuse. With the Mach 4, the added Matryx layer provides greater backbone and resilience, helping the shoe retain its shape and deliver longer-lasting support—especially for heavier movers or players hard on their shoes.
A thick rubber overlay running from the medial forefoot around the toe box adds extra protection for sliders and toe draggers, while reinforced eyelets reassure players who cinch down the laces. A firm heel counter strengthens the rear to extend overall longevity. While the JET Mach 4 still doesn’t offer the armor of heavier, durability-focused models or an outsole guarantee, its toughness is now trending more asset than liability and compares favorably with its lightweight competition.
Who It’s For
- Fast, aggressive movers seeking a lightweight and supportive speed shoe that doesn’t skimp on comfort.
- JET fans who don’t mind sacrificing some weight for better cushioning and durability.
Final Verdict
The Babolat JET Mach 4 evolves the franchise by pairing its signature speed with a more comfortable, stable, and durable build. Improved cushioning and a reinforced upper make it better suited for long matches and aggressive movers, even if it sacrifices a bit of its ultra-minimal feel. While not the most rugged option, it strikes an appealing balance between quickness and protection.
It’s the most complete JET to date.
