How to Re-Grip a Racquet
Replacing your tennis grip is one of those things that's annoying but necessary, and if you know how to do it, you can almost guarantee to impress your tennis friends and not have to rely on help from your coach. The benefits of a new overgrip include sweat and moisture absorption, grip stability, and padding for comfort, all of which help you maintain your grip and control on your racquet.
Here's a step-by-step guide to overgripping your racquet:
Tools Needed:
- Overgrip of choice
- Scissors
- Remove the existing overgrip.
- Remove the plastic backing on the new grip. This will be the side that faces up and have contact with your palm.
- Starting from the bottom, begin wrapping the grip around the handle. Wrap clockwise if you're right-handed and counter-clockwise if you're left-handed.
- Rotate the racquet while holding the grip steady. This will help the grip stay in place while you're wrapping it. The grip should overlap slightly each time you wrap it around.
- Once you reach the end, cut the excess grip with a tapered end. You can also just wrap the excess around the top until there's none left.
- Take the tape that's included with the grip (electrical tape works as well) and wrap it around the loose end at the top.
Voila! Don't worry if your first overgrip job isn't great. You'll improve the more you do it.
